PhD Student in Structural Biology (2 vacancies) (MCBO-2_3/2024)

ICTER seeks applicants with Master’s degree experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, or structural biology. Candidates should be interested in structural biology.

The PhD scholars will have a direct impact on lab development and its success in publishing in high impact factor journals. The person will be also responsible for performing dynamic research to create a competitive research group. The positions will be assigned to the Integrated Structural Biology Group, focused on elucidating the mechanisms of vision at an atomic and molecular level, with the ultimate goal to help developing therapeutics for the treatment of eye disorder(s), help prevent, or at least delaying, the onset of eye diseases.

Profile of candidates/requirements:

  1. Execute experiments and analyze the results
  2. Proactive approach to achieving objectives
  3. Conduct molecular cloning, protein production, purification, and characterization
  4. Active participation in group meetings, institute seminars, and conferences
  5. Hands-on experience in collecting and processing structural biology data
  6. Knowledge in vision sciences
  7. Hand-on experience in the development and testing of protein activity assays 
  8. Demonstrated experience in grant proposal and manuscript writing
  9. Holds a Master’s in engineering, physics, or related fields
  10. Confirmation of attendance at a Pd.D. school, in other cases the possibility of doing external Ph.D. studies

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Assist in the design of laboratory protocols; perform experiments and analyse results
  2. Performing molecular cloning, protein production, purification and characterisation of the resulting proteins
  3. Active participation in research group meetings, and institute seminars;
  4. Writing publications and research reports;
  5. Actively participating in general laboratory activities;
  6. Adhering to and helping to implement good health and safety practices in the laboratory;
  7. Being proactive in keeping up to date with literature, seeking out conferences/symposia to disseminate research findings and looking for potential grant opportunities.
  8.  Development of activity assays for retinal proteins, and analysing the collected data.
  9. Work closely with other team members, including sharing reagents and know-how.

Key assesment criteria:

  1. Documented professional experience fitting the profile requirements
  2. Creativity measured by the quality and number of scientific publications, conference submissions/presentations in which the candidate is an author and patent applications/patents, if applicable
  3. Additional relevant courses or certificates
