Leukocyte adhesion molecules and vascular damage in early diabetic retinopathy

  • Speaker: PhD Emma Lessleur

Pre-clinical research suggests that one of the important insults that drives the development of diabetic retinopathy involves retinal endothelial cell damage secondary to low-grade chronic inflammation. Studies by different groups indicate that leukocytes play an important role in the chronic inflammation of the retina induced by diabetes. The interaction of the leukocytes with the vascular wall is key in the diabetes- induced inflammatory process and maneuvering this interaction inhibits the permeability and degeneration of retinal capillaries in diabetes
