Functional Retinal Blood-Flow Monitoring Using Spatiotemporal Optical Coherence Tomography (STOC-T)

  • Speaker: PhD Mehdi Borjkhani

Retinal blood flow is an important marker of vascular health and plays a key role in many ocular and systemic diseases. However, obtaining reliable quantitative measurements from volumetric imaging is challenging due to vessel complexity, inter-subject variability, and imaging conditions.

In this seminar, Mehdi Borjkhani will present an automated pipeline for retinal vessel detection and blood-flow analysis from Spatiotemporal Optical Coherence Tomography (STOC-T) volumes. The workflow combines Hessian/Frangi vesselness filtering, adaptive thresholding, morphological operations, and deep learning-based masking. It generates vessel maps, depth-resolved flow signals, and quantitative metrics such as pulsatility, supporting scalable longitudinal monitoring of retinal vasculature and consistent comparisons across subjects and time points.

About the speaker

Mehdi Borjkhani is a specialist in the PICO group at the International Centre for Translational Eye Research (ICTER), where he develops methods for functional retinal blood-flow monitoring using Spatiotemporal Optical Coherence Tomography (STOC-T). He contributes to interferometric imaging tools and quantitative hemodynamic analysis, with broader interests in computational modeling and biological signal processing.

He earned a PhD in Biomedical / Bioelectric Engineering from the University of Tehran and previously held research positions including postdoctoral work at Nanyang Technological University. Since 2021, he has been a researcher at IPC PAS in Warsaw.
